Comment: After HS I attended Mankato State College, now Minnesota State University at Mankato, graduating in 1974 with a BS in Recreation and Park Systems.  In May 1975 I tried out and made the USA Women's Volleyball team, and moved to Pasadena, TX.  We traveled to Santa Domingo, Bulgaria, Canada, around the USA, Tokyo and to Heidelberg Germany to qualify for the Montreal Olympics.  Sadly we missed the qualification coming in second to Bulgaria.

Ending my stint on the team because of knee problems in 1978, I worked at various jobs, when finally I started my own business in 1992 or so creating videos for high school athletes seeking college scholarships.  This lasted about 2-3 years, then instead of heavy expenses to move on there, I opted to learn a database program and created them at small to medium companies for many years.  My partner is from Australia, so I gradually diminished my work and started with some investing and property rentals, and moved part time to Australia in 2001.  After 10 years as a resident, in February 2009 I became a citizen of Australia... hey mate!  After volleyball, my sport of choice became tennis, and have added horseback riding on my horse Coco.

I visit the USA off and on in the summers spending a lot of time with my wonderful sister, Laurie, but mostly I live here in Australia.  Many of you might know my brother, Chuck who also was at SLP after me, a star in many sports, sadly died in 2017 of cancer.  I miss him greatly.

Comment:  My story may be a little different than most from the class of 1970. As a senior in 1969 I quit high school only to come back and finish in 1970. During my senior year I was honored to become Mr. MOA Minnesota and somehow was nominated King of Sadie Hawkins Dance. The weekend after graduation, I married my wife Barb - a Princeton High School grad. We have six children and six granddaughters. We have been in the construction industry and lived in rural Princeton for the last 40 years. It has been a long time since being back and I am looking forward to seeing a few familiar faces.

A quick trip down memory lane: does anyone remember going to Dallas Texas for nationals for MOA. I rented a convertible and we had too much fun. This involved Lonestar.

Comment: There was a time when I thought that my earning a PhD in Physiology and Biophysics was one of the most important accomplishments in my life.  But now I realize that the only significant thing I have ever done was to surrender my life to Jesus Christ and become a daughter of the Most High God.

Today I am a researcher, college professor, and Bible teacher with one son who will be graduating from Pacific Lutheran University (Tacoma, WA) next January with a BA in Economics.  Although I teach cell biology, anatomy and physiology my favorite thing to teach is the inductive study of the Bible.  Currently I am teaching the book Hebrews.

Of all the publications I have on my research CV there are two that are significant to me.  During my postdoctoral fellowship, I published a paper on the initial characterization of the drug taxol, which is used today in chemotherapy.  Taxol causes microtubules (which are needed for cell division) to form bundles;  cells with bundled microtubules cannot divide, thus killing cancer cells.

The other significant publication just came out this year; it has put another nail in Darwin’s coffin.  Darwin assumed that evolution occurs by a series of adaptive steps enabled by spontaneous mutations.  My research colleagues and I tested if an E. coli strain with two mutations in its DNA instructions for the enzyme tryptophan synthase (catalyzing the last two steps in the synthesis of the amino acid tryptophan) could acquire additional random mutations to enable it to regain the ability to synthesize tryptophan.  Multiple cell lines all discontinued making the inoperative enzyme rather than acquire mutations to regain the ability to synthesize tryptophan.

For those of you who were in Gordy Weihrauch's advanced biology class with me you might find in fun to learn that I am now directing the dissection of cats with nursing students.

Are there other things in my life besides work and teaching the Bible? Yes!  I am absolutely addicted to my exercise program:  I swim and lift weights six days a week.  Sally Callahan would be impressed to see me doing 75 yards of ballet legs and support scull – neither of which I could do when I was a Surf Belle.  I also enjoy quilting, gardening and spending time with my three toy poodles.

I am now living in Seattle and have been here since 1982 when I came here to do my postdoctoral fellowship.   After high school graduation I went to Chicago where I attended IIT and obtained a BS in Biology and later a PhD from UIC.

Life is good and all because I serve an amazing God!

Comment: Although not a graduate, I lived in SLP for 5 years and attended local schools 5th-9th grades, moving away (to Missouri) early in 10th grade year. Recently reconnected with my SLP girlhood chum and now looking forward to meeting more.

College and IT consultant in DC area until mid-90s, since then hiding out in Tucson with my husband and a small herd of stray cats.
