Medical Technologist Single 2012-08-06 15:33:58
Forty years??? I remember Friday being “movie day” at Cedar Manor (and my parents saved many of my crayoned masterpieces documenting what we watched). One film featured cotton-plugged tubes growing cultures of bacteria in racks in an incubator. (You don’t remember it?!) That movie wasn’t memorialized in my scrapbook and little did I know where it would one day lead. In 1974 I received a B.S. in Medical Technology from the University of Minnesota and went on to enjoy a career of more than 30 years in medical microbiology. I retired a few years ago as supervisor of the Microbiology and Molecular Diagnostics Laboratories at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center, having worked there my whole career. The work was significant, challenging and fun; I had fantastic coworkers and bosses; and I even got to do teaching, research projects and writing along with the daily clinical work. It was the perfect job for me, and I am so grateful for those years. What was not so perfect was the daily commute on the Crosstown Highway, hence the early retirement. Since they tend to put hospital labs in the basement, I’m now appreciating sunshine, birds, flowers and the other simple pleasures subterranean life does not afford.

What is most important in my life now is being a part of my church (Faith Presbyterian in Minnetonka), where I have the joy of living out the answer to the big questions of life I had hardly begun to comprehend sitting on the patchwork, carpet-square rug in Humanities class! I also increasingly treasure the blessings of family and the gift of special friends.

It’s fun to read what all of you have written about your lives. Where did the time go?! I only wish I had made the effort to become better acquainted with more of you during our school days. It was fun for me (with very little musical talent) to be able to learn about music and to play the violin in the school orchestra for so many years. I still enjoy classical music, but I’ve grown wiser and only take out my violin when no one is around to hear me! And I also continue to cultivate microbes, but now it’s only on the leftovers in the back of the refrigerator.

High School dreams and 40th reunion reality aren't quite the same, but life is good.  I've been a life long resident of Minnesota, although I did wander over to St. Paul for a number of years.  2010 is an exciting year.

Enjoying retirement--get to spend a lot of time with my 2 grandchildren.  I also volunteer for the Animal Humane Society, City of Plymouth and a number of other organizations.  Life is good!

Post SLP, I graduated from Gustavus Adolphus, worked a couple of years, and then went to the University of Minnesota where I earned my Ph.D. in Educational Psychology.  Moved to the University of Oregon where I was a professor of School Psychology and Special Education from 1984-2003.  Needless to say, if you haven't been to Eugene, OR, it's "different" in both good and funny ways.  In 2003, our family moved to the Lake Forest area of Chicago where I joined National-Louis University and consult with publishers and school districts around the country on evidence-based practices.  I have 3 boys covering the ages of 24 (Peter, living in our basement Bat Cave), 11 (Dominic), and 2 (Matteo).  The real doctor in the family, Michelle Shinn, is a school administrator (principal) in Lake Forest. Hello Classmates, just wanted to say the reunion was great and it was good to see everyone again. Thank you for all of you that put in the long hours and many many months to make it a success.

God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be, so he put his arms around you and whispered come with me. With tearful eyes we watched and saw you pass away although we love you dearly we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us he only takes the best.. put this on your status if there is someone in heaven you will miss this Christmas

UPDATES:  Up to 11.5 bikes now.  Had a quad bypass in Feb 2017.  Wondering where the last ten years went!  Almost retired.  Still playing the largest casino in the country, the stock market.  Holding off on Social Security as long as I can so far trying to get to age 70.  Going to have to move south for the winters pretty damn soon after this last winter (-24 degrees)!  Good God not much has changed in my life!  Bought a convertible for the first time in my life, that ought to count for something!  Took me 67 years to figure out women love them!  Oh well!  My daughter Lindsey is a fifth degree black belt!

CPA / Investor / Semi-Retired Single 2 2012-08-06 15:17:46
Oh Boy!  Life story is a long one like most I am sure (yeh, done that most will say).  Married Lynette Hunter from our class, had two daughters.  Marriage lasted 10 years.  Then in another relationship for 10 years.  Then two 3 year long distant relationships.  Other relationships less than three years sandwiched in-between.

Been a CPA since 1982.  Done just about everything from teaching, government work, industry, self employed, large firm for 8 years, smaller firms as well.  Current interests in the fraud area so studying for the CFE exam in 2010.  At my age now trying to figure out whether its worth a new career path or just saying "hell with it" and retire.  Not sure of the outcome.  Stock market will determine.

Hobbies include a lot of biking in the summer (rode over 1,600 miles this summer and own nine bikes).  Usually downhill ski out west at least every other year.  Lettered in high school cross country skiing.  Golf when everyone forces me to the driving range for a crash course.  Home improvements is like a second career now after buying my parents house in SLP in Westwood Hills built in 1955.  Also feeding the Nature Center animals every night when they come out of the Nature Center and Party hardy on the Mpls Golf course like in the movie "A Night At The Museum".

What else?  Looking forward to meeting classmates at the reunion.  And thank you, thank you, thank you to those organizing the reunion.  Done work in the Shrine years ago and those kind of people do not get thanked enough!
