Obituary

Sara Lee Payne

Sara passed away peacefully on November 2, 2022 in Sedona, AZ. She was born in Minneapolis, MN in 1952 and later relocated to AZ where she was married and raised two children : Melissa Ann Payne and William Jacob Payne.

She is survived by brothers Howard Savitt and Stephen Savitt, and sister Sue H Savitt, two children and three grandchildren.

Sara was a talented writer/author and singer. She was a vocalist in several bands throughout her years, she also loved dance and had a very playful and affectionate nature. She authored the self-published book, “ Heart-Hugs; Your Pathway to Love!” She had a blog called “Sara Lee Says”. There she was able to express her message, to share what she was learning in what she referred to as “ The Earth School”.

Her life of contrast and living with chronic pain gave her the curiosity and ambition to know and appreciate her truth ~ to heal, to love and accept herself. As a practitioner she was able to help countless others on their personal journey.

She became a licensed hypnotherapist and developed her gift for seeing and connecting to the inner wisdom of her clients. She created workshops and continued to teach and help others while maintaining the desire and dedication to healing herself first. “For one can only teach what they know”…

She was an incredibly loving mother, grandmother and friend. She will be missed by all who were blessed to have known her.

Obituary

"Captain Dave," David Haynes Skoro, age 68, of Bayfield, WI, passed away Saturday, April 3rd, 2021 in Minneapolis, MN, due to a brief illness. Captain Dave was an iconic figure in Bayfield and the surrounding area for decades. His influence, humor, personable nature, and expertise touched literally hundreds of people spreading far beyond the local confines of Bayfield. Throughout his life Dave wore many caps of mastery from mechanical tinkering, photography, to printmaking and knowledge of typography, and graphics salesman, to his outstanding skill as a sailor and teacher of sailing, working at various sailing businesses including Sailor’s World in Wayzata MN. He’d reached the official pinnacle of his seamanship acquiring the USCG 100-Ton Master’s License. The Lake Superior waters became his home. After retirement, Dave was honored as Captain Emeritus at Superior Charters, Bayfield WI, where he had worked as Captain, and teacher for the last 25 years. Entrepreneurship was another skillset for Captain Dave, from a start-up printshop, an up-scale florist shop “Yantra,” a signage business, to several catering ventures which showcased his love of cooking. Captain Dave was also a licenced minister marrying many couples in many settings including Puerto Rico!

Community was everything to Captain Dave. People who knew Dave, remember him as helping whenever he could, never a bad word to others and giving his sage advice. Dave was a great storyteller and wanted the best for everyone. Dave helped people throughout the area including helping a Native American teen to receive his drivers training towards his drivers licence. A proud moment for that teen, reflecting the gratitude many of us have had for having known the big-heartedness of Captain Dave.

Sail on Captain Dave.

Dave was born on July 20th 1952, attending St. Louis Park High School, graduating in the class of 1970.

Dave is preceded in death by parents Donald & Allie Skoro. Survived by brothers: Steve (Jean, passing in 2016), Martin (Roselyn), Peter (Dede), and Robert (Molly) — nieces and nephews, Robert (Ellen), Elizabeth, Stephanie, Thomas, Allie, John, and Chessa. From Glenn Mayeda on November 4th, 2020
Kevin had a happy-go-lucky, kind, hard working soul!!!!!
He had a great talent-working with his hands and mind.
Without him knowing--Kevin gave me direction early in my life by sharing  his interest and teaching me a few things with automotive repair.

Kevin aways promised his mother----he would buy her a pink Cadilac.
Later, Kevin bought a beat up-pink Cadilac for $40-but his mom thought it was so ugly--she would not let him park it in the driveway.

As an average teenage student----direction in life----was necessary, appreciated, but hard to find!!!!!!!!
I forgot to tell Kevin how much I appreciated the direction he had given me.

Later in life--Kevin became an Avid Reader to the point of being a Historian!!!!!!!!!

During the last five or six years--with cancer and mobility being a challenge----Kevin was Enviously-Brave while enjoying his family!!!!!!!!
Such Bravery displayed his Good-Spirited-Natured-Soul!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heaven has one more Good-Natured--High-Spirted-Soul-Driving- a Shiny Pink Cadilac!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From Gary Wignes on November 15th, 2019
David and I were friendly, but not close friends.  We'd greet each other in the halls and when we were in the same class.  Share a laugh and be on our way. These are not uncommon traits in a class of eight hundred plus.
The thing I recognized in high school was that David was already a gentleman.  A wonderful trait and certainly head of our time.   As you can see by his academic accomplishments David was likely the smartest guy in every room he was ever in.  Possibly his best quality was his graciousness in the way he battled MS.  At one of the Park Tavern annual get togethers I joked with David that I had heard he had a malpractice suite going with himself.  He laughed, but I suspect he'd already heard the joke.
My best to wishes and deepest sympathies to Deidre and all of the family.

Obituary

Carole Jean Simon (Alch)

June 4, 1952 - October 6, 2019

In the presence of close friends and family, Carole Jean Simon, of Traverse City, transitioned to ancestorhood on Oct. 6, 2019 at 6:20 a.m. at the age of 67. Both daughters, Elizabeth (Lillie) Jean Wolff and Sarah Simon Wolff, were beside her at Munson Hospice House as she departed this plane. In her words, she had to "drop the body" after gracefully facing the course of a rare and incurable cancer. She was surrounded by family and friends throughout her final weeks, including her older siblings, Stephen Simon and Sharon Frank, and her dear friend and former husband, Glenn Wolff.

Carole approached her final years on her own terms, with style, wisdom and humor, similar to how she related to challenges and blessings alike throughout her life. She was illuminated by her quintessential warm energy and spirited personality right up to her final moments. Reflecting on her wisdom and perspective, longtime family friend, Dr. Terrie Taylor, remarked, "This is her finest act yet." Friend and mayor of Traverse City, Jim Carruthers, mentioned recently in passing that he was still receiving impassioned letters communicating her proposed civic improvements. Her zest for upholding sound ethics and community justice never waned. She was a loving and devoted mother and mentor to Elizabeth and Sarah, who feel she imparted wisdom beyond measure as she guided them along their respective life journeys. Both daughters identify with Carole's passions, personally and vocationally. They are embracing a connected afterglow of her loving presence.

Carole was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on June 4, 1952 to Florence Dansky and Melvin Simon. In her late teens she became enthralled in studying music and dance. She exhibited remarkable talent for both and was encouraged by her music teachers to continue pursuing singing and playing piano. She danced with the Nancy Hauser Dance Company, where she explored modern dance choreography and also studied at the University of Minnesota.

In Minneapolis in 1978 she met Glenn soon after he graduated from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. They moved to New York City in 1979, where Elizabeth was born, and in 1987 they relocated to Traverse City, where Sarah was born. Shortly thereafter Carole pursued a real estate license and cultivated a well-respected business in realty through Coldwell Banker and Real Estate One. She was known for her ethical business practices, impeccable attention to detail and passionate love of houses throughout her three-decade long career.

In 2013 Carole took up social dancing, reigniting her passion and love for dance. She was stunning to watch with her innate coordination, musicality, charm and charisma and her deep understanding of movement style. In addition to her talent for piano and dance, Carole was a gifted wordsmith and poet. Her family plans to publish a chapbook of her poems in the coming year.

Carole was an active and proud member of Temple Beth Shalom, where she found cultural connection and supportive community within the small but vibrant local Jewish population.

Carole was known for her wisdom and big picture understanding of what's important in life. She would often write down her poignant insights. "If you define yourself by your money, your spouse or partner, your house, your job, your title, or your looks, you are in trouble because all those things can or will go away. If you define yourself by the love in your heart, your compassion for others and yourself, your service to others, your joy in simple things, and your good sense of humor when facing adversity, then you are a champion and will survive it all," she wrote.
When asked about the dying process she remarked to her family, "We are all electrical energy, which, when we die, and in this case the dying person is me, the electrical energy continues. We don't know exactly where it goes, but it coagulates somehow into a magnetic field, like the movements of a really good modern dancer who's totally grounded and connected with the floor. We are all just iterations of stardust, here for a moment and then back again to where it all began. A completion of the loop."

Carole Jean will surely be missed. Her warm spirit and deep wisdom live on in those whose lives she touched. Her family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff at Munson Home Hospice and the Hospice House who helped care for her with the utmost respect and presence; as well as her dear friends Carol Miller and Nancy Gallagher who were loving and devoted members of her caretaking team through her final days.

In lieu of flowers, the family recommends memorial contributions to one of the following organizations selected by Carole.

If you would like to give a gift to Munson Hospice, please contact the Munson Healthcare Foundations at 231-935-6482.

Obituary

At last, a son! Craig Luverne Mattson was born to Ralph and Frances Clauson Mattson on February 28, 1952 in Karlstad, MN. His first years were spent on a farm near Lake Bronson, MN. His family moved to Minneapolis, MN where he attended Calhoun Elementary School, Westwood Junior High and St. Louis Park High School graduating in 1970. While in high school Craig modified his car and did some drag racing at MN Dragways. Later on he customized a 1965 Nova which he raced at Brainerd International Raceway and Rock Falls, WI with his crew. He enrolled at Dunwoody Institute to learn the trade skill of welding only to be interrupted by a draft notice from the U.S.Army. After basic training he was stationed in Germany. Upon return he traveled to California and found employment making side cars for motorcycles which led him to purchase a Harley Davidson Sportster which he customized. It’s a beauty! Using his skills he was employed by Twin City Welding and Maple Grove Welding for many years until he opened his own shop…. C Mattson’s Welding in Hopkins, MN. He was well known as the best welder in the area.

Craig was married two times and divorced. He has a son, Kyle Luverne, with Jean Moy. He also became a second Dad to Jean’s two children. He has two sisters, Kay and Mary/Lainey Mattson Vagle, Brother-in-law Chuck Vagle and Kay’s son, Kevin whom he considered his brother. Craig’s Doberman Pinscher, Tina, was an important part of his life and well trained.

Craig lived life to the fullest. His friend, Kelly King (and his deceased brother, Jeff) knew him well...the good and the bad. They worked hard but also played hard! They partnered in restoring cars, presently working with Kyle on a 1969 Camaro. Craig made friends easily with everyone he met and retained his connections with high school friends and even Cub Scout friends as well. He would help anyone in need. John 15:12-13. Craig told his sister “this very funeral home has become our hangout now” as he has lost many buddies in recent years.

In the later years he was a seasonal worker for Chuck Minter and family in McGregor, MN on Davis Lake. He became a family member to them. Craig said often it was like paradise living there with clean air, acres of trees and lakes, the natural habitat, picturesque and peaceful. Old Murphy (his least favorite horse) has outlived even Craig!

Craig’s loving care team of Kyle, Kay, Mary/Lainey, Chuck and Julane witnessed his transition to his eternal home. It is a Swedish/Norwegian tradition in our family that when a death has occurred you open a window and light a candle, which we did, to let his spirit soar. At the same moment on the street outside we heard a roaring motorcycle go by…...Craig’s last ride! RIP Buddy!

Survived by a host of family and friends.

I first met Gale at Westwood Jr. High, in Mr. Clark's History class.  Gale was funny and at times (to our delight!) exasperated Mr. Clark.  We remained friends throughout the rest of junior high and high school.  I loved the twinkle in her eye when she thought of something amusing.  She had a wonderful, positively aggressive approach to life.   Our world is not as lovely without Gale.

Eloise and I were friends since first grade.  We lived next door to each other in Mpls. and went to Calhoun School. Then we both moved away from that area and found each other again in St. Louis Park.  We were friends for a long time after graduation but then lost track of each other.  I was very suprised to learn of her passing. Goodbye old friend!

Obituary

Barbara LaVigne of rural Star Prairie left us unexpectedly on July 20, 2013 at Regions Hospital, after the sudden onset of serious health issues.
Barbara Joanne LaVigne was born February 4th, 1952, in Stevens Point, WI, to John and Margaret Hougdahl. She attended school in Colfax through her sophomore year, and graduated high school in St. Louis Park, MN. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in social work.
She married Nick LaVigne in 1979, and they had three children, Tyler, Anna, and Tucker.

Barb worked as a social worker for Polk County, and has worked at Baldwin Area Medical Center for over 20 years.

She loved to be with her family, work in her flower gardens, read, and travel.
While sharing our loss and our memories, friends mentioned a few thoughts that reveal a lot about Barb: She made the time for what was important- family and friends; She was the “conduit” that kept the extended family connected; Her irreverent sense of humor raised raucous laughter-and eyebrows; If you asked for her opinion or advice, you could depend on getting the unvarnished “truth according to Barb”; She went above and beyond to meet the emotional and financial needs of patients and their families; and this was repeated by many, “She was my best friend”.

Left to miss her and celebrate her life are: Husband, Nick; children Tyler (Jenny Phillips-Kube), Anna, and Tucker. Brothers John Hougdahl (Ginny), Doug Hougdahl (Debi), and Tommy Hougdahl. “Grandchildren,” Jake and Lucy Kube. Niece (Cassie) and nephews (Robin and Josh), Aunt Bev, and many cousins. Mother-in-law, Ina LaVigne, and sisters and brothers-in-law. Many life-long friends, close friends, neighbors, and co-workers.

Preceded in death by: Parents John and Margaret Hougdahl; father-in-law Norman “Stony” LaVigne.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to SART (Sexual Assault Response Team, http://stcroixvalleysart.org/), or The Family Resource Center in Baldwin, WI.( http://www.frcscv.org/). Barb worked closely with these organizations, and they were very dear to her heart.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, July 24th from 5 to 8 pm at the Williamson- White Funeral Home, 222 Harriman Ave. North, Amery, WI. 54001.

There will be a celebration of Barb’s life at East Immanuel Lutheran Church on Thursday, July 25th, 207 120th Street, Amery, WI. A visitation will take place from 10-11 a.m., followed by the memorial service at 11 a.m. A luncheon will follow. Burial will be at the East Immanuel Cemetery.

Obituary

Steven was diagnosed with Lymphoma approximately 15 months ago and was undergoing various treatments including chemo and bone marrow transplants.  He lost his battle this month after a courageous fight.  Here is his story from his Caring Bridge site:

In February of 2011 I was diagnosed with Lymphoma. It was clear from the pathology that the best way to treat the disease was a bone marrow transplant. The idea was that I would have 6 rounds of chemo to kill all of the cancer in my body, extract healthy stem cells, then put me in the hospital at Stanford, kill my immune system and then put the stem cells back into my body where they would eventually grow a completely new healthy immune system. The transplant took place in September 2011 and it wasn't long before I was feeling OK, weak but OK. Unfortunately our optimism was short lived. We found out shortly after the first transplant that the lymphoma never went away and that a donor transplant would be necessary. The idea behind this one is that after chemo, donor stem cells are infused into my body where they fight with my own compromised cells, take over and create a new healthy immune system. Weird science.

Since we have not been able to find an obituary, if you would like to read more on his Caring Bridge site, his journal and the outpouring of support for him and his family, here is the link:

From Wayne Klayman on August 2nd, 2012
 Hello...
I was a classmate of Risa's at St. Louis Park High School...if memory serves me well, I first met her in the 7th grade at Central Jr. High School. I was a shy, nervous, insecure boy with few friends. Risa took me under her wing, introduced me to her many friends, saw to it that I was invited to many Bar and Bat Mitzvas, etc. I can't imagine life at that awkward age without Risa's friendship. She was a friend to anyone and everyone and I can still see and hear her "strong" presence in my mind. I have never forgotten her and had always hoped our paths would one day cross again. I remain hopeful they still will....

I am profoundly saddened to learn of her passing, and offer my most heart-felt condolences to her family.

Michael was truly a nice guy.  I got to know him first in 9th grade, as he would play his guitar and introduced me to Hendrix.  Although he traveled in 'different circles' and I saw him less and less - I had found out that he was quite sick and hoped to be able to catch up with him at the reunion.  Rest in peace Michael!

Mike was a talented musician...I remember many days where I took his schoolbus home and we would jam on his guitars--LOVED Hendrix tunes and BB King the most back then, but incredibly knowledgeable of the whole blues scene.

Unfortunately, we lost track of each other for the last several decades and I'm deeply saddened by his passing--wished I could have attended the funeral but found out about it afterwards.......don't stop jamming, Mike.

He was so nice, and let me tag along on his paper route,

He'll always be 15 and special too me.

From Wayne Klayman on April 8th, 2010
Bob was the consummate "good guy"...fun as well as funny...sarcastic, but with a twinkle in his eye that let you (and everyone) know, he was just kidding...he often took the less popular kids under his protective wing as, he too, didn't run with the top social circles...and yet, he fit in with everyone in his own way. he defied labeling. Tough when he had to be, but a more gentle guy you'd rarely find. I have several personal stories about Bob that I was looking forward to sharing with him at our upcoming reunion...Bob Gendreau was the kind of guy who would go up to the least-known classmate and say: "I remember you!" - and mean it...Goodbye Bob, you will be missed...

Dave and I were good friends. He used to make me laugh and the craziest of ideas he had. One time at the theater, he coaxed me into blowing my nose {hay fever all the time} and I made it honk. The theater erupted from not me but from Dave's laughing. I'll never forget it.

David and I lived across the street from each other and were best childhood friends.  He had a great smile, laugh, and sense of humor. He loved practical jokes (at your expense). He was always upbeat and fun and loved life. David was genuine with no pretense and concerned about others. He would stop by and visit with my mother when he was in the neighborhood. Who else do you know who do that?

Best memory is playing football in the front yard when David runs helmetless into my Dad's old rusty Buick. We couldn't stop laughing as the red crinkled rusty metal virtually vaporized from the front fender. You had to be there! The car came out a lot worse than David.

I remember Ron as my best buddy at Aldersgate Church every Sunday.  I never knew how brilliant he really was until reading all those life's accomplishments.  He was just one of the guys trying to have fun with the rest of us.  Little did we know at the time.

From Dick Abrohams on April 7th, 2010
Ron and I met at St. Louis Park High School, probably in a German class with Herr Russell. We hug out a little bit, playing tennis, or going to Embers to eat. Ron could eat a whole lot!

I remember Ron's tennis game included a huge powerful serve. He enjoyed hitting the ball as hard as possible, as did I. We went to his family's lake cabin to fish one summer, with Jim Cohen. I was not much of a fisherman (and haven't gone since), but enjoyed the company.  There was a lot of teasing and pointed sarcastic humor all around.  I remember conversations with Cathie McElroy, my then girlfriend and later wife, about finding a nice girl for Ron. We would also attend Gopher basketball games with a group of friends.

Ron would talk about astronomy, physics, Carl Sagan, and later mused about how to get college students enthusiastic about physics. He was always an avid learner and sought to promote his learning ethic and science education in particular. Ron would bemoan the lack of resources and the inadequate promotion and emphasis that science (physics, in particular) received in the curriculum. He later became a most revered, honored and dedicated educator.

I remember Ron's goofy smile and chuckle. He enjoyed laughing and having fun. He was an optimist, clever, genuine, and curious. He was humble and not self-impressed, despite his substantial accomplishments. I will always treasure our friendship.

I was in the same boyscout troop as Mark going all the way back to the Cub Scouts.  I can remember Mark as the bugler of the Boy Scout Troop.  Up at ManyPoint Scout Camp he refused to get up and blow his bugle in the morning unless someone got up and warmed it up first in a pail of water over the fire.  What a prankster he was!  And laugh, could he make you laugh!

Joan and I were very good friends back in high school and college. We used to drive around with my CB and talk to the truckers. Joan did a perfect Mae West impersonation. The truckers chuckled and we roared in laughter. There were many similar stories. I'll never forget her smile and laugh.
Sadly, I just found out about her passing about an hour ago. I am stunned and shocked, and deeply saddened by this awful news.
May you rest in peace, my dear old friend. God is lucky to have you near him now.

As I began to prepare for our 40th reunion I thought a great deal about seeing many folks that may have not been in my close circle of friends, but whom I knew well and always liked.  Gary was one of those folks, in fact near the top of my list.  All through junior and senior high Gary and I would 'connect' through social gatherings, sports, at school, and especially in high school, a good deal of partying (at the Carriage House and Lake Harriet).  I was therefore shocked and saddened when I first accessed this website and found that Gary had passed away.  Rest in Peace Gary,-you were really a Good Guy and thank you Mary Segal for letting me know what happened.

From Wayne Klayman on April 8th, 2010
Gary was one of the guys I have "known" all my life. He lived a few blocks away, went to Brookside together, Central of course, and finally Park...For me, he was one of those friends you knew but for whatever reason, hung out in different circles. Sometimes though, those circles overlapped and that's when I realized what a nice guy he truly was. To Gary, I was one of those just-described friends. We easily could have been great friends, but were only close acquaintances...and yet, in that socially-charged, in-between classes ritual in which we all greeted our friends (and looked away from those who weren't) as we passed by, Gary Sprague never once looked away from me if we passed one another. He easily could have (he was a big guy and I was...well, let's just say I was "stature deficient") but he never did. Not once. He always passed me with a friendly and enthusiastic greeting - a gesture I didn't receive with much frequency. I think he knew that too. He was always there for me at those important, but seemingly insignificant moments. He was the friend I never knew...and the friend I never knew I had...Thank you Gary, for all those little things that ended up meaning so much...

He always had to make everyone laugh and cheer people up through his gestures and attempting to act clumsy.  (Note---Charlie was very coordinated---so---he actually had an easy time acting clumsy.  I hope that makes sense!!!!)
Charlie even attempted comedy with the unique $25 cars he drove!!!!
Such 4 wheeled ---classics!!!!!!!!!
He would even wear a classic--old--fashioned--rimmed--hat while driving his cars.
Always loved and remembered as the life of the party!!!!!!

Jack, Thank you for sharing this tribute about your older brother Barrie.  I remember you from way back as a little kid.  Barrie & I were friends throughout junior high and high school.  We spent many Friday & Saturday nights together with our special group of friends.  I think both Barrie & I (there were no doubt others) came drunk to a highschool dance, but I was the only one to get in trouble and suspended.  Somehow, Barrie seemed to always escape being caught.
We lost track of each other for a time, but reconnected later on in his life and we visited for a time after his diagnosis.
To say that Barrie was the life of the party, would be an understatement.  Barrie was always fun, irreverant and lived life on the edge.  At the time, he was the first person I had ever known to travel alone to India.
I once asked him if he had a partner, his answer was "I'm too cantankerous for anyone else to live".
Barrie was a great friend, a great person and he continues to be missed.

Dear Jack,
I don't log on to this site very often but tonight I did and saw your moving tribute to your brother Barrie. Since you specifically mentioned his former classmates, I wanted to respond.
I had several classes with Barrie throughout HS and while I was unaware of his being gay at that homophobic time, it wouldn't have mattered to me. He made me laugh so many times and I loved knowing him - even if I wasn't in his closest circle of friends.
While his death saddens me, I am spirited by the many lives he touched after High School and am grateful for your sharing so much of his life with all of us - his former classmates and friends.
May Barrie rest in peace. It was a pleasure to have known him...

Barrie wasn't just my older brother, but a person who was one of my hero's in life.  How memoriable he was is illistrated by how many people still come up to me that knew my brother and always have a smile when they talk about him.  Although My brother lived a short life, don't feel bad for him, because we should all live such a full life.  From the time he graduated Slp he was one step on a Airplane off to somewhere exotic place.  Unfortunately our father had to call the police to escort him off the plane till he was 18 a couple of times :-) He traveled the world twice, visited places Like Iran, Iraq, India, China, and too many countries to count.  When He came back to the states he settled in L.A.  Self teaching himself the skills to become extremely succesful.  Barrie wanted to be an actor getting a few small roles in movies, one I still watch every time its on is the original star trek motion picture.  He also took his dancing skills to the gong show being the only person to be on it twice and actually won!  I still have the gong in my living room mantle.  From there he had to make a living so he became the head controller of Hemdale pictures, a little studio that while he was there produced a couple of small pictures you may have heard of,  "Platoon, and Terminator".  He was on his way to reaching the stars until one fateful day when he went to UCLA to have himself tested for a sickness that was afflicting Male Homesexual Men.  My brother was alway courageous and open with his sexuality.  When He found out that he had contracted this disease and was HIV positive, Like everyone at the time, he knew it was a death sentence.  That was 1981.  It wasn't till 2 years later that he accepted that it didn't need to be a death sentence.  I truly believe My brother's life began after he contracted the most incidious disease, of our generation.  As more and more of his close friends, lovers started passing away around him, he became more active in aids awarness and prevention.  He was a constant beacon of light for so many.  Because he was diagnosed at UCLA, he was in the first comprehensive study of its kind on the diease.  Because of this he had access to all the cutting edge drugs available.  He had AZT before it was called that.  He had the cocktail before it was the cocktail.  But I truly believe his calming nature, his sense of humor, and how at peace he was kept him healthy and alive for so long.  He was one of the backbones of the Pasedena Aids service center.  Being a person so many looked up to, showing that Aids doesn't have to be a death sentence.  But what was one of his truest acts of courage, was a project he received a small grant from to start a literacy program for homeless people. The difference is he would teach homeless people to teach other homeless people how to read. His belief is that a homeless person would be more responsive another homeless person, and give self worth to the person who was the teacher.  He had no immune system left but still worked with homeless people every day.   It was one of his proudest achievments.  My brother lived for 16 years with Aids and He fought it till the end.  I don't know what was harder to see in the end, him passing away, or the countless people that were devestated by his passing that on a daily basis were cheered up by his sense of humor.  How he was seen as a symbol of how you can survive with Aids.  How many people came up to me after and personally wanted me to know how he affected them in such a positive way.  So I just wanted you fellow classmates of my brother to know he lived, he dreamed, and he became a person who represents the best of what a person can be.

I did not have Tom in any of my classes that I can remember, but I really feel compelled now to give him credit for one thing that no one else in our class has attained.  To this day I still smile and laugh at his idea of posting his "now" and "then" photos used in our 20th reunion profile book.  The then picture was simply his high school graduation picture I'm sure and then he repeated the same pic for the "then" pic and drew in the 20 year differences with a black marker.  He added glasses, a beard, a mustache and a burning cigarette out of his mouth.  I laughed so hard when I first saw that!  He was one creative soul who left an impression on me that I cannot seem to shake to this day.  I can see him and another classmate I did know well Mark Griffen, both pranksters trying to out do each other up there while waiting for all of us to join them someday.  Thanks for the memories Tom!

Tom and I lived on the same block grew up together and became good friends.  I have many fond memories of Tom, David Le Sage,Dean Benjamin,Steve Steige, and I hanging as the pack of boys terrorizing the neighborhood.  I can still here his sweet mother opening the front door and saying in the kindest of voices " Tom you'll have to come in now, Boys you'll have to leave".  I know what his mother thought that some of us were a bad influence on Tom, but those of us that knew him knew that along with that kind demeanor was just was a boy just as mischievous and adventurous as any of us.
Tom and I were also roommates when we went to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. We spent many nights, smoking, drinking and listing to Cat Stevens and T-Rex while solving the worlds problems.  He was a very talented man with a gentle sole.

Boy, did Dick pass too soon! I remember all those drives around Lake Harriet, with a cigarette or two (always Harriet - never Calhoun). What were we looking for? No, not the Rose Garden. All the years working at Burt's - Max Kamel telling us to stop playing switch finger (never quite knew what that meant but it didn't sound good) and Andy Nowak bringing his lunch. Dick was a good guy and a good high school friend. He is a good memory!

How many free games did we rack up after school and weekends on the pinball machines at the Carriage House?  Pretty much every day after school for us it was hang out there with Garber, Peltz, Scroggins and Kurenitz.  When we weren't there and the weather was nice, it was hop into the car and out to Paul's Landing where we jumped in a boat and spent the late afternoon and evening fishing (what homework?).  Well, I guess I did skip the other "hangout"---working at Burt's Shoes with many of the same crowd as above.  Lunch on Saturdays at the Nankin, then back to the store.......

You left us WAY too early and I think about you often.  We'll miss you at our gathering, always do......

Dick was truly one of the nicest people I have ever known.  We became very close during high school and working at 'Burt's Shoes' together.  After high school, as I visited at least once a year, we remained close all the way up until his death, in an era without cell phones or email to stay in touch regularly.  I last saw him during our 20-year reunion and he died suddenly a few months later.  Too many memories to pass on here.  I can only repeat what a fine person he was and that I still miss him.  Rest in Peace Dickie!

From David Ketroser on March 6th, 2010
Dick's mother and my mother were best friends since college so I knew him his entire life.  Considering he had many friends and a great sense of humor, I'm surprised to be the first to write a memorial.

We would all be fortunate if we were as personable as Dick, had as quick a wit or as friendly a smile.  His premature death came as a complete shock to everyone who knew him and made us all feel more vulnerable.

His mother (an awe inspiring and accomplished woman who died recently) never really recovered from Dick's death.

I'll leave the anecdotes to his circle of high school friends, but the reunion will be a little empty without Dick.

As Nestor points out, there were a number of us hanging out with Kev back in the '60s and I could name a few more people.  Kevin was, at times, a crazy sort like when he climbed a high voltage tower and did a Superman flying impersonation at the top until the cops ordered him down and took him home.  But he had his serious moments, too.  He was a good friend with a good sense of humor and he left us way too soon.

Kevin, Wheeler, Myslak Brothers, Hartman, Herbert, Rheinhart, Stansfield.  All from the old neighborhood.  Good memories, all of them.

Dean and I started to become friends in senior high, especially 12th grade.  We sat across from each other in, I believe, Mr. Allen's class.  We talked about alot of different things, but one thing that sticks out in my mind was that Dean idolized Steve McQueen.  When he passed, I remember going to his funeral and it was wicked cold and blustery.  The next day I became very ill and remember talking to Dean alot from my sick bed.  I missed him alot back then, and still think about him today.

Dean and I were best friends from the age of 7 until his death.  We lived and terrorized the same neighborhood together.  He was a great guy who died way to early.

Dean died suddenly during our senior year from Hepatitis. Dean was a great guy that was well liked by all who knew him.

I too remember the day Richard was killed while delivering papers.
He was a quiet boy and not many of us in 7th grade knew him very well at all. He was just one of those many kids that blended in with the background. That day, however, I rememember so many people crying and/or in shock. We had never lost one of "us" before, and suddenly dear Richard had more friends than he ever knew he had in life. His death taught all of us a lesson that day. Many of us felt guilty for never even having said hello to him. I know I did. And as it turned out, he was more ambitious than all of us put together. I carried Richard's memory with me all thru my school years.

I remember the morning that Richard was killed- it was a dark morning, raining as I recall. I was in math class that Richard was a part of when out teacher told us that he had been delivering papers that morning and was hit by a car. I remember hiim as a quiet shy boy. It is a enduring memory from junior high school.
